The company said that although passenger volumes increased in the first four months of fiscal 2022, the recovery has slowed slightly in recent weeks, in line with the rest of the industry.

“Over the longer term, we remain confident that the division will offer attractive margins and returns given its strong local market positions and networks,” the company said.

He said discussions with the UK Department for Transport regarding the London and Southeastern Railway Ltd. franchise – which was transferred to the operator of last resort in October – as well as the associated independent review continued, and a further update will be provided at the time of its annual results in December.

An operator of last resort is a company that operates a rail franchise when a UK rail company is unable to do so.

In September, the company said the DfT chose to appoint the operator of last resort to resume its Southeast franchise on October 18, when its deal expired.
