The public broadcaster VPM Media Corp. acquired Style Weekly, the alternative Richmond-area news, art and culture newspaper which ceased publication in September after nearly 39 years.
The Chesterfield County-based company, the parent company of VPM, which represents the Virginia home to public media, announced the purchase on Thursday. Terms of the contract are not disclosed.
The acquisition means that VPM now owns the ownership of StyleWeekly.com and Style Weekly’s social media properties.
However, Style Weekly’s photographic archive, including prints, negatives, slides and some digital photographs, were donated to The Valentine Museum in September. The collection is expected to take years to be cataloged, digitized and accessible to the public, according to the museum.
The purchase of Style Weekly’s web address and social media properties should help VPM deepen its artistic and cultural coverage, VPM said.
In the coming weeks, VPM plans to resume online publishing of arts and culture articles and calendar of events on StyleWeekly.com and its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter channels as it assesses the future of the print publication.
“Over the next six to eight months, we’ll take the time to listen to readers as we develop a long-term strategy and determine how Style Weekly can best serve the community,” said Steve Humble, VPM Director of Content. .
