NSU Sports News and Broadcast Team Wins Myriad LSWA Honors

NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State’s sports news and broadcast teams have been honored in a myriad of categories at the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s annual writing, broadcast and sports news competitions.

NSU staff won awards for writing, broadcasting, graphic design and photography at the annual awards luncheon on Sunday, hosted by Merci beaucoup.

Demon Sports Network announcer Tony Taglavore took first place in the “Best Live Broadcasting Team” category for his work with Captain Shreve High School football, alongside color analyst Jimmy Martin.

The judges said, “The play-by-play announcer is very good. I always like to hear right away where the game ‘is, and he did it immediately. You didn’t have to wait for the score, time, opponent, etc. I used the color announcer very well. “

Demon broadcaster Patrick Netherton was honored twice, winning third place for “Best Radio Interview” for his conversation with ESPN broadcaster Anish Shroff. Netherton also received an honorable mention in the solo division for best radio host for “The Patrick Netherton Show”.

Northwestern State Deputy Sports Director for Media Relations Jason pugh landed second in the “Division II Best Feature / Release” (men’s basketball / baseball division) for his article on how the Demon baseball coaching staff handled the sudden absence of the coach -chief Bobby barber in an April series against Nicholls.

Deputy Director of Sports Information Matt vines also landed a second place for “Division IV Best Feature / Release” (all other non-football related sports) for his article on NSU football co-co-coaches, Jess and Anna Jobe, being able to hang out with their newborn son, Sterling, during the pandemic.

NSU photographer Chris Reich grabbed second place in the “Best Sports Photo” category for his photo of Demon’s second goal Daunte Stuart, swarmed by his teammates after his hit against Nicholls in April. It was the first LSWA prize for Reich, a newcomer.

Northwestern State took third place in the charts thanks to Brad Welbornfictional video game cover featuring the Demons.

The annual LSWA Awards Luncheon concludes the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Weekend in Natchitoches each year. The 2020 awards ceremony did not take place last June, however, awards were given out for work produced during the 2019-2020 sporting calendar year.
