Milwaukee Performance Group Says Members Among Victims in Wisconsin Christmas Parade Tragedy – NBC Chicago

A Christmas parade in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha on Sunday quickly turned from a joyous event to a tragedy, when an SUV broke through barricades and smashed through crowds, killing at least five people and injuring more than 40 .

The Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, a group that describes itself as “an award-winning granny group that performs in about 25 parades each year, from Memorial Day to Christmas,” posted Monday morning on Facebook that they were performing at the parade when the fatal incident s ‘is produced.

“Our band did what they loved, performing in front of the crowd in a parade putting smiles on faces of all ages, filling them with joy and happiness. While they were playing, the grannies enjoyed hearing the cheers and applause from the crowd, which certainly made them smile and warm their hearts. “

The post also mentioned that some of the deaths included members of the group.

“Those who died were extremely passionate grannies. Their eyes shone … with the joy of being a granny. They were the glue … held us together.”

The city has not released additional information on those who died or were injured.

A “person of interest” is currently in custody, Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson said on Sunday, but gave no details of the person or any possible motive.

Attorney General Josh Kaul tweeted Sunday night that the investigation was ongoing, with help from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

The Waukesha Police Department is expected to provide an update at 1 p.m.
