Indonesian Broadcasting Commission bans broadcast of 42 songs before 10 p.m.

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) banned radio stations from broadcasting 42 songs before 10 p.m., saying their lyrics were considered “immoral”.

“So what’s in these 42 songs? For example, they contain words of violence and obscenity or allude to sexuality. This is attributed to Law No. 32 of the Code of broadcasting conduct and broadcast program standards [P3SPS], which declares that broadcasting is in the interest of national integrity to build the character and identity of a faithful and godly nation. Adiyana Slamet, Head of West Java KPI, said detiknews.

Radios are also request to censor lyrics that do not conform to Indonesian standards before playing the 42 songs.

The songs include hits from world famous artists such as Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Cardi B and Suga from BTS.

The KPI has a history of media censorship. Popular comedian Tukul, for example, received a warning in July 2019 because a scene from his TV show showed a man allegedly possessed. The sanction was pronounced on the basis of child protection.

In a separate event, in August 2019, the KPIs have imposed sanctions on Global TV for broadcast The SpongeBob movie in which the main character, SpongeBob, is shown throwing a pie in the face of another character. They were also reprimanded for streaming Raving Rabbids Invasion because it displayed a caricatural violence. Global TV received a written warning and was reminded to follow a censorship order.
