Al Washington breaks down Notre Dame’s defensive line performance this spring

Notre Dame defensive line coach Al Washington is in a unique position this spring. He supports one of the best groups in defense, but there is still another level for the unit to reach. Washington is tasked with building the squad despite not having one of their best players (Jayson Ademila) and with his best player (Isaiah Foskey) on limited action this spring.

This created opportunities for Washington to continue to build depth and get reps for younger players. After Tuesday’s practice, he talked about developing his growth, his emerging leadership and the growth of some of his young players.

Progress in spring

“Oh man, it’s getting better every day. Very motivated, focused. We have a lot of experience in the room, obviously. What I appreciate is how much they recognize that there is another level and that’s what we’re trying to accomplish. They’ve done very well this spring.

“The normal stages, we are a good group, how can we become great? There is always room for improvement. Each individual and as a unit you watch wherever you are. You look today, our practice, how can we be better the next practice? This is the mentality that we adopt. It really is in the details; greatness is in the details. This is our mentality. How can we take a good thing and make it great? »

On Isaiah Foskey, Rylie Mills and Leadership

“Starting with Foskey he’s done a great job of leading the way, not just with his words (but) his actions, I’m very happy with him. Rylie is another one who has one of the best springs in the whole group, just to single him out for the simple fact that he’s really taken the next step for him. To be honest with you, there’s a group of older guys who have all taken the bull by the horns and become leaders. We have to keep building. We have to keep our goals at the forefront of our minds, so everything we do has an end goal. I was very happy with that.

On Jacob Lacey

“Lacey is one of those leaders, those upper class men who stepped up and played really good football. He did a good job for us inside. He gets better with every practice. He always has a great attitude and I think a lot of that comes from his love of his team and obviously his love of the game. He was a pleasure to work with and he did a great job this spring.

On Tyson Ford and Jason Onye

“Man, Tyson Ford, he’s going to be special. He did a very good job. He’s played a lot of snaps this spring and is really becoming a very good football player. I’m very excited about Tyson. Jason Onye is another who is now completely healthy and enjoying those reps he gets and the opportunities he gets on the inside. I think the future is bright for these two guys.

More about Onye

“I think as a coach you appreciate that. He can be raw in some areas, but he’s very coachable. I feel like when there’s not a lot to unlearn, it’s “It’s a lot easier. He’s a young player because of his inability to play due to injuries and he played a year in high school. There’s a lot of potential there. The greatest thing about Jason ” is that he is eager to learn, he is very coachable. We work every day after training. He wants to be a very good player. The future is really bright for Jason.
